Next On TV Squared: Mr. Smith ran for three months in 1983, telling the story of a political advisor who, as you may have guessed, was a talking orangutan.


The show was a starring vehicle for Manis, best known as Clyde in the Clint  Eastwood comedy Every Which Way But Loose.  Production was troubled, with the star reportedly alienating his costars with his prima donna behavior and compulsive self-pleasuring.  Manis attempted to reteam with Eastwood for Any Which Way You Can, but his difficult behavior, and his advancing age, led Eastwood to cast a younger orangutan.
